William Lee Speir

1937 ~ 2019 (age 81)

Dawson--Mr. William Lee"Bill" Speir died on January 19, 2019 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.  The visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Harvey Funeral Home with the funeral to follow at 2:00 P.M.  Interment will be at the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Speir was born in Dawson Georgia, November 17, 1937, son of the late Willie Leon Speir and Emma Lee Speir.  He was raised in Dawson and graduated form Terrell County High School in 1955.  He attended Young Harris College before joining the U. S. Army, where he served a three year stint including two years in Germany.  His military record includes an 18 month period in the National Guard.  

Bill was employed with a finance company for one year and then joined Gulf Oil Company in Jacksonville, Florida for three and one-half years.  He returned to Dawson for two years working with the Standard Oil Bulk Plant here.  He began driving for Trailways Bus Company in l967 and was there when it merged with Greyhound Bus Company in 1987.  Then he drove charter bus tours and traveled through out the United States and Canada.  After his retirement, he and his wife returned to Terrell County to make their home.

He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church of Lee County.  His activities included being a Poll  Worker Manager with the Terrell County Board of Elections and being a church volunteer in special projects.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dorothy(Dottie) Evans Speir, son Grant Speir (Sandra), daughter, Tammie Speir Melear (Mark); four grandchildren, Jessica Melear Lucht (Shane), 

Ross Speir (Katie), Ryan Speir (Emily) and Tony Melear,and three great-grandchildren, Finley Lucht, Marshall Speir, and Ellie Speir.
