Samuel Ray Christie, life-long resident of Terrell County, was born July 17, 1929, son of the late David Keagler Christie and Willie McGill Christie of the Yeomans Community. He attended public schools in Parrott and graduated from Terrell High School in 1947. He later attended the University of Georgia in Athens. Ray was a prominent farmer in the area and was honored by the Georgia Money Maker Cotton Club in 1964 for high production of lint cotton. He was a member of the Lower Chattahoochee River Soil and Water Conservation Committee and was given the honor of Man of the Year in 1967. He was elected to serve as Supervisor for this outstanding committee from 1974 through 1981. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dawson and a former member of the Dawson Rotary Club.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Dewene Mathis Christie, his brother, William Earl Christie of Dawson and two sisters, Eloise C. Marshall of Parrott and Emily C. McDowell of Blakely. He is survived by daughters, Kay C. Norton (Kelly) of Lake Blackshear and Karen Van Tonder (Barend) of Acworth; brother, Frank Christie (Neil) of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Christopher Ray Stokes (Mae) of Valdosta, Lisa S. Jones (Matthew) of Watkinsville; Sarah Lacy Slater of Acworth and Samuel Riley Dame (Brittany) of Acworth; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ray was a true southern gentleman and an avid hunter and fisherman that truly loved God’s land. After he retired from farming, he used his talents to nurture a beautiful courtyard of flowers, ferns and vegetables. He also enjoyed collecting coins and supporting his favorite teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. He will be missed.
