Dewene Mathis Christie of Dawson, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016 in Americus at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home. The funeral service will be held at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Dawson on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Mavis Lark Moore officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 27th, 3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Harvey Funeral Home.
Dewene was born in Terrell County, September 27, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Dewey William Mathis and the late Willene Mitchiner Mathis. She graduated from Dawson High School in 1952 and shortly married Samuel Ray Christie, a prominent young farmer of the Yeomans Community in Terrell County in 1954. They were both involved in farming most of their adult lives.
She was a member of the Mary Brantley Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the First Baptist Church of Dawson.
Survivors include her husband Samuel Ray Christie of Dawson, two daughters, Kay C. Norton and husband, Kelly, of Lake Blackshear, and Karen Van Tonder and husband, Barend, of Acworth; four grandchildren, Christopher Ray Stokes and wife, Mae, of Valdosta; Lisa S. Jones and husband, Matthew, of Athens; Sarah Lacey Slater of Acworth; and Samuel Riley Dame of Acworth and seven great-grandchildren.
